Lawyer comparison checklist

A useful comparison is based on the work you need, not a star score or a claim that one firm is universally best. Use the same questions with each firm and keep the written answers with any proposal or costs disclosure.

Compare the same first stage

Describe one defined next step—such as reviewing a contract, advising on a decision or preparing for a hearing—so each firm can explain a comparable scope.

  • Work included and excluded
  • Documents reviewed
  • Named responsible practitioner
  • Expected output from the first stage

Write down evidence of relevant fit

Ask about experience with the particular issue and forum. Treat a firm’s answer as information to assess, not as a promised outcome.

  • Relevant jurisdiction and forum
  • Who will perform and supervise the work
  • Conflicts and capacity
  • Whether counsel or another lawyer may be needed

Compare the complete cost picture

Write down professional fees, GST, disbursements, assumptions and events that may change the estimate. A smaller initial figure may cover less work.

  • Fixed, capped, staged or time-based fees
  • Court, search, expert, counsel and travel costs
  • Billing and estimate-update frequency
  • Consequences of ending the engagement

Check communication and access

Confirm the main contact, response expectations, appointment format, accessibility needs and secure document process before sending confidential information.

Questions to ask

  • Who will be responsible for the matter?
  • What exactly is included in the first stage?
  • What could change the estimate?
  • How will important decisions and deadlines be communicated?
  • Where can I independently check the practitioner’s credentials?
